Publishers Association join Govt Roundtable on AI

Press Release

Dan Conway, CEO of the Publishers Association joined the culture secretary, Lucy Frazer, and key figures from the creative industries today at a roundtable to discuss the impact of AI on the sector.

The conversation focused on how the government and the wider industry can address the risks AI poses to creators’ intellectual property and explore how AI can help grow the sector, supporting jobs and talent. This included concerns about copyrighted material being used without permission to train AI models, and the associated risks of AI produced materials infringing creators’ copyrighted content.

Dan Conway, CEO at the Publishers Association said: “I was delighted to join the roundtable today, and to see the government taking proactive steps to listen to the concerns of the creative sector when it comes to AI development. Whilst we are all hugely excited to see what AI can unlock for publishing, we still have concerns around how copyrighted content is being used by AI firms. At present, there is no remuneration in place for authors and creators, no attribution for researchers and no transparency from AI firms as to how and where content is being used.”

“We need the government to ensure that correct, fair and transparent use of intellectual property is at the front and centre of AI innovation. It is imperative that human creativity is protected in the face of new technologies.”

Others in attendance at the roundtable included;  Warner Music and Getty Images, and representatives from the Intellectual Property Office and Creators’ Rights Alliance.
