Having just graduated from university I felt the need to get some extra experience under my belt to help me secure a position in publishing. I had previously completed two work experience placements in publishing last summer, where I was fortunate enough to have friends studying in London to stay with. As these friends had now also graduated, I didn’t have anywhere to stay in London this time around, and my commute from home was both expensive and quite long!
Applying for a room through the Spare Room Project was both a quick and easy process – I simply emailed James explaining my situation, my CV and the dates I was completing my work experience. In less than two weeks James had found someone for me to stay with for the whole three weeks of my placement (I had just been hoping for someone to stay with for one week)!
My host was extremely friendly and chilled out, making me feel right at home. Her home was clean and spacious, and an easy commute into central London. During the first week of my work experience, I had an interview for a job I applied for in the same company, and found out a week later that I was successful! Naturally, I was over the moon to secure a position in my dream industry. As the role is a 6-month contract, my host very kindly offered for me rent her spare room! This has saved me the hassle of a long and expensive commute from home or trying to find somewhere in London to rent for only 6 months.
The Spare Room Project has literally changed my life as my new living arrangement wouldn’t have been possible without the help of James. Plus, my three weeks were made much more pleasant and affordable by living in London rather than commuting from home.
I would highly recommend the Spare Room Project to anyone living outside of London who wants to get into the publishing industry!
