We work alongside publishers and industry stakeholders to improve inclusivity in the industry. We hope that through industry-led action we can create a workforce that represents the rich diversity of the UK's demography, opening up opportunities for aspiring publishers and ensuring the long-term health of our industry.

if you're an employer with a pay bill over £3 million each year, you must pay the apprenticeship levy from 6 April 2017. In 2018, there will be the opportunity to offer Publishing Assistant Apprenticeships (Level 3).

Inclusivity Action Plan

This year, the Publishers Association announced a new 10 point industry-wide action plan to tackle inclusivity within the industry’s workforce to ensure publishers better reflect the UK population.

Many individual publishers already have fantastic initiatives underway to improve diversity and inclusivity, and this is very well embedded now, seeing results in improved inclusivity in the wider publishing ecosystem, from the writers they publish through to the workforce. The Building Inclusivity in Publishing Conference 2017

Last year, the Publishers Association partnered with The London Book Fair to deliver the second Building Inclusivity in Publishing ConferenceDelegates from all stages of the publishing supply chain attended the conference to learn about best practice and declare pledges for individual and company action.

Spare Room Project

The Spare Room Project pairs Publishers with spare rooms with aspiring publishers from outside of London. If you're a publisher with a spare room, or an intern in need of one, email James Spackman.

Megaphone is a writer development scheme, giving support to BAME (Black, Asian or other Minority Ethnic) writers as they write their first novel for children or teenagers. The scheme has been running since April 2016 and so far two of the five participants have been signed to major literary agents.

The Publishers Association has produced a guide to organisations in the UK that can help publishers improve the inclusiveness of their organisations.

The EQUIP (Equality in Publishing) charter provides recommendations for publishers to improve the inclusivity of their workforce. From appointing mentors to advertising all jobs externally, the charter recommendations are a fantastic resource for publishers wishing to demonstrate their willingness to improve the inclusivity of the publishing industry.
