Exactly a year ago, staff started doing volunteer reading at our closest primary school, Avondale Park. For our editors, whose role it is to create books for this age group, it was a wonderful opportunity to spend a quiet hour sitting and reading with the children we want to inspire to become passionate readers. At that time, Avondale Park was a vibrant, multi-cultural school with a real buzz about it.

In the early hours of the 14th June, fire ripped through Grenfell Tower, and tragedy ripped through the surrounding community. One of the schools to lose children, parents and staff in the fire was Avondale Park, just a few hundred metres away from the tower. Some of the Egmont team joined parents, staff and children for a morning of remembrance at the school. We stood in the playground with the blackened tower looking down upon rows of children, dressed in green and singing their hearts out. A green balloon was released for each member of the school community who was lost and some of the older children read aloud their memories.

We feel so privileged to be a small part of this resilient school and will be supporting more classes in the coming year.
