Membership benefits

There are many reasons to join the Publishers Association, the leading membership organisation for UK publishing.

Our members are at the heart of our mission. We bring them together, provide them with the information they need, seek solutions to problems, and campaign to achieve them.

We have two types of membership: Member and Associate.

Whatever your size or specialism, your business will benefit from membership.

Membership of the Publishers Association is open to any business which the Council deems to be a bona fide publisher of books, journals, ebooks, or audiobooks in the United Kingdom.

Reach your full potential

We equip our members with strategic business advice and practical tools, from up-to-the-minute policy briefings on the most salient changes threatening publishing (like the government’s consultation on copyright exhaustion) to exclusive deep dives into publisher sales revenue. Our members enjoy a 360-degree view of the UK publishing industry and its place in the world, enabling them to outpace everchanging social, political, and economic challenges.

Grow your business internationally

Grow your business internationally with the best possible advice and support. Our Export Toolkit, developed in partnership with the Department for International Trade, contains in-depth country profiles for principal markets to inform your export strategy. We also take publishers to all the major book fairs with our Book Fair Services and run an export focus group for small and medium-sized enterprises.

Keep up with the latest research

Access our annual Industry Insights Dashboard for free with detailed tables of country-level export data. Industry Insights is the only publication to report UK book and journal publisher revenue. It is one of many reports that we commission for our members on topical issues, from UKRI’s open access policy to the benefits of high-quality teaching resourcesSubscribe to our newsletters for regular policy insights and industry updates.

Improve your business practices

Access toolkits and guides designed for publishers by experts, such as our author diversity toolkit and Brexit Review. Access thousands of template business documents for free through our partnership with Simply Docs, obtain free advice on a wide range of tax and legal areas from the Croner Business Support Helpline, and enjoy a 25% discount on Clarke’s Publishing Agreements, the ‘must have’ legal resource for publishers.

Shape your business environment for the better

As a respected voice in Westminster and Whitehall, we have shaped the UK publishing agenda for the better part of 125-years. Our dedicated team of policy experts maintain excellent relationships with political decision-makers who have the power to make or break our industry with the flick of a pen. We’ve successfully changed laws and prevented catastrophes to ensure our members’ businesses thrive regardless of regulatory and legislative change.

Change government policy at the ground-level

Use your voice to influence policy on behalf of the publishing industry. We regularly seek our members’ views on topics ranging from copyright exhaustion to fair online marketplaces. Often this takes place at the sectoral level and is driven by our groups and taskforces, which any member can apply to join. Currently, we are calling on the UK government to Save our Books to prevent a potentially devastating change to the UK copyright regime.

Contribute to a sustainable and inclusive industry

We develop tools and guidance to help our members become responsible businesses. Our annual workforce diversity survey is one of the largest and longest-running in the creative industries. We run the Trailblazer Group for the only publishing-specific apprenticeship standard. And we lead the industry’s first collective action on climate with Publishing Declares.

Use our Copyright Infringement Portal to scan hundreds of known pirate sites, marketplaces, and social media platforms for infringements of up to a thousand titles and send takedown notices. Since 2009, the Portal has reported four million infringing links and removed 1.5 million Google search results.

Connect with the people who matter most

We bring our members together with their peers to forge an exclusive community of the industry’s top professionals. Our events are joyous occasions to celebrate the publishing trade and the people that make it. From morning teas at our bright and well-appointed offices in London Bridge to award ceremonies in the House of Commons and conferences at the Barbican, we relish any opportunity to connect our members – both with each other and the thought-leaders shaping society, culture, and politics.

Collaborate with your sector

Join a committee related to your business, from anti-piracy to sustainability, children’s to audiobook publishing. The groups all perform a variety of roles and functions, covering the full breadth of our members’ businesses and interests. They provide information, direction and instruction to our staff, taking care at all times to ensure no competition law issues arise.
