Spare Room Project: Paul Stark

The Spare Room Project is an initiative supported by the Publishers Association and run by James Spackman of Profile Books. Publishers offer up their spare rooms for interns based outside of London.

I’ve really enjoyed being involved with the Spare Room Project – it’s been great to meet new people keen to get into the industry, and to be a part of something that’s aiming to make the industry accessible. I’ve hosted two people so far, Charlotte and Lizzie, who were in London for two very different placements (one in the production team at Ebury, and one on the UCL’s week-long course). It was interesting to chat with them in the evenings about their experience of the industry, their plans going forward (and the Bake Off) – it was great to hear different perspectives on the business I’ve been in for 10 years, and compare their experiences with my own. I’m looking forward to hosting more people in the future, and would encourage colleagues to get involved if they can!
