PA & INDUSTRY NEWS
Record breaking year for publishing
Sales of books and journals reached £4.8bn last year, their highest ever level, making 2016 a record breaking year for the publishing industry, PA figures released today show. The increase in sales of 7% on the previous year is the largest growth in a decade when in 2007 digital was first included. Industry growth has been fuelled by success both home ad abroad, with export sales rising by 6% to £2.6bn, and now responsible for 54% of total revenues. Overall digital sales were up 6% to £1.7bn, despite a drop in eBook sales of 3%. The release received wide coverage including on the BBC, Guardian, FT, Times, Telegraph and on BBC Today (8.09am) and BBC Breakfast.
Seoul International Book Fair
There are a handful of places available on the UK stand at the Seoul International Book Fair. South Korea is one of the Department for International Trade’s target export markets, and they are providing TAP grants of £2,500 to help qualifying SME’s with their stand costs. The PA successfully secured support under the TAP scheme for the fair after our 2016 International Book Fair Survey showed it was one of the top two fairs members were interested in exploring. The PA has commissioned a custom-built UK stand and the stand package costs £2,950. For more information, please contact Gloria Bailey.
Member breakfast briefing - update
We held our first member breakfast briefing, sponsored by the Publishing Licensing Society (PLS), on Free Trade Agreements this week featuring presentations from Miriam Gonzalez, Partner in International Trade & Government Regulation at Dechert, and Andrew Hood, Senior Director at Dechert and ex-legal adviser to David Cameron. The presentation was very comprehensive, outlining the key things to be aware of during the negotiation process, the likely models the UK could adopt with the EU post-Brexit and the timeline for the negotiation process. Members please email Chloe Smith for a full report.
Literary book prize
A book tracking the journey of a heart from donor to recipient over 24 hours, has won the Wellcome Prize for science writing. Maylis de Kerangal's Mend the Living is only the second novel to win the £30,000 prize, which is awarded to work of fiction or nonfiction that engages with health and medicine. Meanwhile UK author Sunjeev Sahota, whose novel The Year of the Runaways was shortlisted for the Manbooker prize, was one of twelve authorsawarded the 2017 European Union Prize for Literature. The Federation of European Publishers, which the PA is a member of, is among the coordinators of the prize.
World Book Night
Book lovers in the UK celebrated World Book Night last Sunday, with prisons, colleges, public libraries and homeless shelters giving away books donated by publishers to spread the joy of reading. A survey commissioned to mark the event found UK adults would like to read more but are being prevented by their busy lives. The Reading Agency called on "book lovers" across the country to give books to people who don't read, recognising the challenges people face in choosing the right book to read. The survey of 2,000 UK adults found that over a third (35%) struggle to find a book they really like.
