PA Celebrates Publishing Success with DCMS #CreateUK

The PA celebrated the £10.1bn contribution that the publishing industry made to the UK economy. CEO of HarperCollins UK, Charlie Redmayne, gave insight into what makes UK publishing a unique and great industry. A 2016 forecast for the publishing industry was presented in a new http://www.publishers.org.uk/policy-and-news/pa-blog/uk-publishing-2016-and-beyond/blog post by Joanna Prior (President of The Publishers Association and MD of Penguin Books General.) The celebration formed part of the DCMS #CreateUK campaign which celebrated the £84.1bn value of the UK creative industries.
 
Nielsen e-book tracker
Nielsen, a global provider of information and insights into consumers, has launched PubTrack Digital UK, the first dedicated e-book sales reporting service for the UK. The service will enable publishers to gain greater insight and understanding of market trends and sales across all platforms for the first time. Replicating the IS platform which has been in operation for five years, PubTrack Digital UK consolidates UK e-books sales data from a panel of participating publishers to form a market measure using publishers’ invoiced sales data. The service will provide reports monthly in three month arears, e-book volume sales from the top tier publishers through all UK channels by ISBN, title, author and Nielsen Book Scan. Library Campaigners Lobby Parliament
Authors, library campaign groups and members of the public travelled across the country to lobby against the widespread closures of public library services across the UK. Organised by the Speak Up For Libraries coalition, protestors gathered in Central Hall, Westminster, to demonstrate on Tuesday 9th February 2016. Calling Submissions for British Book Industry Award

The British Book Industry Awards will celebrate the greatness of the British book trade and the people behind it – the best books, the best writers, the best bookshops, and the best publishers - from industry greats to those starting out. Building on the success and legacy of The Bookseller Industry Awards (the trade “Nibbies”), 2016 will mark the first step, and a step-change, in the way the book trade presents itself to itself and to the wider world. If you’re a publisher, you can enter your books, your campaigns and your people for an award. If you’re a bookseller, you can nominate yourself, a colleague, or your bookshop itself. Awards are also available for librarians, rights professionals and non-traditional retailers. Deadline for submissions is Friday 19th February 2016. To enter please download the entry pack here. Quantum Publishing Innovation Award 2016

The Untold Power of the Book

Galaxy Quick Reads has published a new report to mark its 10th anniversary. The Untold Power of the Book was conducted by Quick Reads, in partnership with the Centre for research into R. The research was conducted by Quick Reads, in partnership with the Centre for Research into Reading, Literature and Society (CRILS) at the University of Liverpool. The study was commissioned by GALAXY® Chocolate who has now supported the Quick Reads – The research indicated that 27% of the workload and making an introduction to the joys of reading for pleasure. This furthers, the additional, the work of the charities involved.
 
Literacy Beyond Levels – Reading and Writing Scales
The CLPE Reading and Writing Scales describe the journeys that children make in order to become literate and will help teachers to understand the progress children are making. On 8th February 2016 the new CLPE Reading and Writing Scales was launched at the Literacy Beyond Levels conference at CLPE. Originally developed over 30 years ago, the Scales were first published as part of the CLPE Primary Language Record (PLR). The PLR was widely used in primary schools in the late 80s and 90s; influencing language and literacy records in all parts of the UK. The CLPE Reading and Writing Scales have been completely updated for the 21st Century classroom. The scales can be downloaded from the CLPE website
