Alibaba Group and IPCC in China Combat Copyright Infringement
The Alibaba Group and IPPC in China have signed a Memorandum of Understanding which strengthens their efforts to combat copyright infringement. The MOU broadens the scope of an earlier agreement signed in August 2011. Under the new MOU, the parties will cooperate to combat infringement on global retail marketplace AliExpress as well as China’s largest online shopping destination, Taobao. Alibaba and IPCC will collaborate more closely through regular communication and exchange of information. In addition, the IPCC will assist Alibaba Group to identify product listings of potentially infringing products offered for sale by third parties. The PA Exposes Copyright Myths
A new paper launched by the PA, Copyright and the Digital Single Market: Busting the Myths, exposes major inaccuracies surrounding copyright and the digital single market. These range from the accusation that a DSM is not possible without copyright reform, to the charge that text and data mining is not possible without an exception to copyright. The PA have also launched a #mythbuster campaign to share and debunk copyright rumours. Commenting on the paper, PA Chief Executive, Richard Mollet said:
“It is time to debunk the long-pedalled myth that copyright is an obstacle to growth in the digital economy. When you look at the success of publishing and other creative industries in developing online products and services it is palpably untrue – copyright is the means by which the digital economy functions, allowing works to be made available to consumers and rewarding creators and the companies which invest in them.” For more information about the paper please visit the PA website.
DCMS #CreateUK Week Showcases Publishing Success
The success of the publishing industry was evident during this year’s #CreateUK week. The DCMS social media campaign, celebrated the phenomenal achievements of the UK creative sector, of which publishing is integral. The PA showcased industry achievements and shared advice for people wishing to kick-start a career in publishing. The PA’s Chief Executive, Richard Mollet, commented:

PA Launches New Way to Stay Connected to Publishing
The PA has created a new service for self-employed people, currently working within publishing or taking a career break, who wish to stay connected to the industry. PA Professional builds on the former PA Consultant Affiliate service and provides access to a wide range of opportunities for people wishing to offer their services to PA members or the wider publishing community. The PA’s Chief Executive, Richard Mollet, said:
“PA Professional provides self-employed people, who may have worked in the UK or international publishing industry, the chance to maintain their contacts and knowledge as well as giving them a window through which to market their services. PA Updates UK Publishers’ Trade with China handout
The PA has updated its handout UK publishers’ trade with China in preparation for the Beijing International Book Fair in August and will be publishing a new report on China in early August. The handout is available to download for free from our website but the full market report, when it is published, will be available free of charge only to PA members and GPI Subscribers. Non-members will be able to purchase a copy from the PA online bookshop.
UKTI Education and Clyde & Co Capability Building Workshop on the Gulf
The UKTI Education and Clyde & Co Capability Building Workshop on the Gulf took place on 6th July 2015. The workshop outlined a number of opportunities in Saudi Arabia, Qatar and UAE. It also examined the regulatory, legal and business model considerations necessary to compile a successful bid. The UKTI Education team is actively seeking to take UK expertise overseas and is in the process of coordinating groups on ELT, teacher training, edtech and SEN. Clyde & Co explored the pros and cons of the licensing and outlined typical company structures. They also made suggestions on how to deal with local partners. Clyde & Co. highlighted the need to evaluate the home model and making sure it will be protected before deciding whether it can be set up over overseas especially with regards to IP where the laws differ greatly with the Gulf. Simon Lucas (EC Harris) gave a checklist for those putting bids in - always under-promise and over-deliver. Ashwin Assomull of The Parthenon Group which has publisher clients pointed to high K12 market growth but a more complex HE picture, highlighting Dubai as an educational hub with considerable potential; and Ian Wallace from UK Export Finance, the world’s oldest export credit agency, outlined their products and services for supporting the exporter.
English in Latin America: An Examination of Policy & Priorities in Seven Countries
The British Council has launched research on the impact of government policy on English language levels in Brazil, Columbia, Mexico, Ecuador, Peru, Chile and Argentina at the British Academy on 17th June, in a bid to support policy development at government level, and help UK ELT suppliers access Latin America. The research covers comparative analyses of national English language policy, the English learning environment, business and trade, attitudes towards English language learning and factors shaping demand for English. At the launch, speakers Allan Taggart (British Council) and Zainab Malik (Education Intelligence, British Council) analysed the research findings, outlining ambitious policy targets and a wider drive towards English-language development; over 90% of those in the region now think that English is essential for management-level jobs in all countries. A Panel discussion with Zainab Malik, Anna Searle (British Council) Isabél González Ferrada (Ministry of Education, Chile) and Ricardo Romero (ELT Community Foundation, Colombia) included a plea not to take a transition from books to digital for granted in the region from Romero; and a note from Ferrada that the students if not the teachers in Chile are concerned that the English levels they get in the public school system are insufficient, suggesting even stronger demand is coming through.

Call for Events: Academic Book Week, November 9th – 16th 2015
Academic Book Week is a key event arranged as part of the Academic Book of the Future – a two year funded research project exploring the future of the academic book. The week will be an umbrella for a series of events and activities organised by stakeholders in the Academic Book Market. The Core project team is calling for all events, existing and new, that can be promoted under the ABW branding. Event proposals should include a commitment to a write a news item or blog post for the ABW website immediately after the event. The types of events the project team is keen to include are: Debates, seminars, workshops, competitions, interviews etc. There is however scope for interesting proposals. The latest issue of the DAISY Planet flags a Book Industry Study Group (BISG) webcast on ‘Get Started with EDUPUB’, designed to help publishers of all shades begin to implement EDUPUB. As the blurb notes, EDUPUB aims to enable advanced digital educational content to be reliably distributed, consumed, and interchanged across a wide variety of devices and platforms - register now for the webcast. The SIEM Conference 2015 aims to provide UK education institutions with the opportunity to gather the latest market intelligence to deliver successful marketing strategies for 2016 and beyond. They are seeking session proposals which focus on:

Untold Stories, Unheard Voices: On Diversity in literature, 9th July 2015
With the perception being that publishing is still largely a white middle-class industry, accessed through unpaid internships that many young people simply can’t afford to work, and that publishers' tastes and the books they choose to publish shape our culture, yet still do not fully reflect it, what effect is this having on the stories that are getting through? What can we do about the voices and stories that are not being heard? Featuring a panel discussion with writer Kerry Hudson (Thirst), Alexandra Pringle, Group Editor-in-Chief of Bloomsbury, writer Nikesh Shulka (Meatspace), editor and Booker Judge, Ellah Wakatama Allfrey and from the floor, expert witness Danuta Kean, (author of the Spread the Word report ‘Writing the Future’) and audience Q&A, this event is part of a National Conversation taking place around the country being led by Writers’ Centre Norwich. London Digital Book Printing Forum 2015
The Digital Book Printing Forum 2015 took place in London on 25th June 2015. This day-long forum at the Royal Society in London included sessions on: the future of the book, digital book print market trends and forecasts, Drupa 16 from the perspective of print system vendors, and innovations and opportunities. Clays International Sales Manager, Andrew Copley, and CUP Head of Production Supply Chain for Academic Books ,Simon Crump, described their working relationship. Toby Cobrin, Director of Interquest, outlined the latest print trends. Two years ago the hype around electronic was high, but this has settled and publishers are concentrating not on format but content. The book is becoming increasingly customised. Publishers are using social media more confidently to garner customer views and there is less waste and storage in the supply chain. Top concerns for 2015: cost control, implementing multi-channel strategies, and disintermediation (faced with Amazon, Google and self-publishing).
PLS Open Meeting
This year’s PLS Open Meeting was held on 1st July 2015 in Burlington House, home of the Royal Society of Chemistry; and offered a cool haven on a hot day to a high number of attendees! PLS Chair Mark Bide and CEO Sarah Faulder outlined the 2015 landmarks including the appointment of Mat Pfleger as Managing Director of the Copyright Licensing Agency (CLA), the implications of the European Collective Rights Management Directive for both CLA and PLS, and preparation for ALCS, CLA and PLS to share the same office space at Barnard’s Inn from 20th July this year. Mat Pfleger pointed to four years’ steady growth at CLA, a new six-year deal with DfE to allow schools to copy with confidence to 2021, a sharper focus on customer need and a pilot to transform the licensing solution with five universities. CLA Head of Development James Bennett outlined future licensing solutions from CLA (including Licence Plus, plans for EHESS and PackTracker, a Second Extract Permissions Service and Digital Content Store),in parallel session with breakouts on the new PLSe Account and how to get publisher permissions licensing practice fit for purpose in the digital age. Keynote speaker IPO Copyright and Enforcement Director Dr Ros Lynch gave her view on what’s next for copyright and enforcement. She called for a note of any issues around TDM, thanked publishing for work for within the Copyright Hub, and flagged the recent blocking order against ISPs as an example of joint government and creative industry working. IPO will be talking up the importance of the evidence base as the European Commission continues its work on the digital single market.

Guadalajara International Book Fair (FIL) 2015 - UK Writers Announced
Sir Andrew Motion, Anne Fine, Val McDermid, Joanne Harris and Sally Gardner are just some of the 30 authors who have confirmed their participation in the UK Guest of Honour Literary Programme at this year’s FIL, and publishers who have booked space in the UK Pavilion include Egmont, Usborne, Macmillan, DK and Collins.
The FIL Niños programme, will feature the participation of four-time Oscar-winning British studio Aardman Animations, in the form of Shaun the Sheep (star of the next Aardman movie) and his little cousin Timmy. In terms of visual arts, the University of Guadalajara’s Museum of Arts (MUSA) will show a collection of prints by David Hockney, one of the UK’s most important living artists. Meanwhile, the Cabañas Cultural Institute will host an exhibition of the varied works of David Shrigley, the conceptual artist who has established himself as one of the leading figures in contemporary British art. And finally, for nine consecutive nights the stage of Foro FIL will welcome the most cutting-edge and electrifying expressions of contemporary British music and dance. Acts performing will include indie rock group Spector; the dance company of world-famous choreographer Wayne McGregor; the colourful and lively Jazz Jamaica; and the Graeae Theatre group, recognised globally as pioneers of accessibility in world-class musical theatre through their production of works involving disabled performers. SIBF Matchmaking Programme 2015
The Sharjah International Book Fair's Matchmaking Programme is now open for applications from International publishing rights professionals who have a catalogue of translation rights to buy or sell. Hosted as part of SIBF's Translation Rights Centre, the fifth annual SIBF Matchmaking Programme will bring together over 250 rights professionals from across the world this year from November 1st-3rd for an event which centres on the buying and selling of publishing translation rights. Gateway Asia II provides fully funded support, worth in excess of £3000, for UK SMEs looking to access India. Working with UK India Business Council and Harrow College, Gateway Asia II provides free support through 1-2-1 advice, online tutorials, practical resources, and seminars. If you’ve already been accepted onto the programme click here. Fully funded spaces are limited to less than 130 and applications will be processed on a first come first serve basis. In order to qualify for the grant your company must:-
• Have a turnover of less than £35 million.
• Have less than 250 employees.
• Have a London office or address.

PA People Database
The PA is looking to create a bank of interesting and personable people in publishing in their first few years within the industry, who would enjoy being given the chance to inspire young people and educate them about the range of jobs available. We’d like to compile a list which we can draw on for video interviews, blogs, career profiles, top tips, and school and university visits. Any job type will be welcomed: it’s about the variety in publishing, and is aimed at a broad demographic. We want to reach those who have never heard of publishing, who have rejected it as a career because they don’t see a space for themselves in the industry, or who haven’t yet decided which career path to take within the industry.

British Academy Lecture, 7th July 2015
Professor William Cronon of the University of Wisconsin-Madison is speaking on Who reads Geography or History any more? The challenge of audience in a digital age at The Royal Geography Society, 1 Kensington Gore, London SW7 2AR on Tuesday 7 July . The event is free. Professor Cronon will be asking how geographers and historians can best respond to the challenge of reaching academic and non-academic audiences in the 21C, and examining the suitability of their usual formats (the scholarly journal article for geographers and the book-length monograph for historians) in the digital age.
