The Publishers Association is delighted to present a list of Best New Voices in audiobook publishing for Love Audio Week. All of the audiobooks included in the list have been nominated by members of our Audio Publishers Group to showcase some of the most exciting new talent in audio narration.

#LoveAudio returns for a fourth year and will run from Monday 21 to Friday 25 September 2020. The week-long digital celebration of audiobooks is designed to showcase the accessibility, innovation and creativity of the format. Audio Publishers across the UK join forces to raise the profile of audiobook publishing amongst the publishing industry, early career professionals, and jobseekers.

Aimee Lou Wood

Narrator of Wuthering Heights, written by Emily Bronte and published by Penguin Random House Audio

Aimee Lou Wood, star of Netflix’s Sex Education, narrates this beloved gothic tale of love and tragedy for the Women’s Voices in Penguin Classics series.

Bayo Gbadamosi

Narrator of The Rosewater Redemption (The Wormwood Trilogy, Book 3), written by Tade Thompson and published by Hachette Audio UK

Bayo Gbadamosi stars as series lead Kariem in the TV adaptation of War of the Worlds for Fox/ Canal Plus opposite Gabriel Byrne and Daisy Edgar-Jones, currently in production for their second series. He will also return to the second series of The Great for Hulu later in the year. Bayo launched his career by staring in the central role in Mad about the Boy at The Bush and Young Vic Theatre directed by Ria Parry. He then went on to star in numerous hit stage productions in London including I See You (Royal Court), Gloria (Hampstead Theatre) and Barber Shop Chronicles (National Theatre). Other screen work includes Doctor Who (BBC) and This Time with Alan Partridge (BBC).

Fiona Hampton

Narrator of Rootbound: Rewilding a Life, written by Alice Vincent and published by Canongate Books

Fiona Hampton is an English actress who works in theatre, television and film. She is best known for playing Amelia in Kingsman: The Secret Service.

Longlisted for the Wainwright Prize and mixing memoir, botanical history and biography, Rootbound examines how bringing a little bit of the outside in can help us find our feet in a world spinning far too fast.

Kevin Shen

Narrator of Before the Coffee Gets Cold: Tales from the Cafe, written by Toshikazu Kawaguchi, translated by Geoffrey Trousselot and published by Picador

Kevin Shen starred in the European premiere of David Henry Hwang’s Pulitzer Prize finalist play Yellow Face at the Park Theatre and the National Theatre in London. Other theatre credits include Snow in Midsummer by Frances Ya-Chu Cowhig at the Royal Shakespeare Company, Caught by Christopher Chen and Paper Dolls by Philip Himberg. Film credits include Netflix’s A Christmas Prince: The Royal Baby, Unlocked, Close, and The Rezort. He has appeared on television in We Are Who We Are, Criminal Minds, EastEnders, LA’s Finest and 24: Live Another Day, among others. He starred in the radio drama Fear of Flying on BBC Radio4 and has recently narrated the audiobooks Before the Coffee Gets Cold: Tales from the Café by Toshikazu Kawaguchi and Dragon Mountain by Katie and Kevin Tsang.

Laurence Boxhall

Narrator of The Grunts, written by Philip Ardagh and published by Bolinda Audio

Laurence Boxhall is a fresh-faced, incredibly talented film, television and theatre actor. After having spent his childhood moving between England and Germany, he attended Scotch College and later graduated with a BA in Fine Arts (Acting) from the National Institute of Dramatic Arts (NIDA). Laurence has narrated a number of audiobooks for Bolinda this year including The Grunts series by Philip Ardagh, King Coo by Adam Stower and Owen and The Soldier by Lisa Thompson which comes out October 2020.

Like ‘The Twits’ for a new generation, The Grunts are neither clean nor clever, but their adventures are most definitely terrifically fun reading.

Maria Gbeleyi

Narrator of All My Lies Are True, written by Dorothy Koomson and published by Headline

From the bestselling author of Tell Me Your Secret and The Brighton Mermaid comes the breath-taking sequel to the iconic Sunday Times best seller The Ice Cream Girls.

Maria is a first-time audiobook narrator who was selected to feature on All My Lies Are True as part of an open casting call run by Headline and Dorothy Koomson. The Find My Verity campaign aimed to provide reading talent from underrepresented backgrounds with the opportunity to gain audiobook narration experience.

Michelle Asante

Narrator of On Wilder Seas, written by Nikki Marmery and published by W. F. Howes

Michelle Asante is an award-nominated actress who has received critical praise for her wide-ranging performances across film, television and theatre. She was nominated for a Broadway World Award for Sunset Baby, and for a Black Entertainment Film Fashion & Television Award (BEFFTA) for Best Actress in a Television Show, for Monroe.

Inspired by a true story, this is the courageous tale of one woman’s uncharted voyage into the unknown, as a lone woman among eighty men.

Reece Harris, Bernard Mensah, Daisy Prosper, Jot Davies and Liz Sutherland-Lim

Narrators of Nightingale Point, written by Luan Goldie and published by HarperCollins Publishers

Students of East 15 Acting School, including Bronze Audio Performer of the Year Bernard Mensah, bring to life the residents of Nightingale Point, who, when their world is irrevocably changed, must find a way back to lightness, and back to each other.

  • Reece Harris graduated East 15 in 2019.
  • Bernard Mensah graduated East 15 in 2019 and won Audio Production Awards 2019 Audio Performer of the Year Bronze. He is currently Jayden in Billionaire Boy UK tour.
  • Daisy Prosper graduated East 15 in 2020 and will next be narrating The Chalet.
  • Jot Davies is an experienced audiobook narrator.
  • Liz Sutherland-Lim is also the voice of Ms. Potts in The Adventures of Paddington.

Shvorne Marks

Narrator of Queenie, written by Candice Carty-Williams and published by Orion

Shvorne Marks trained at Arts Ed London School of Acting. She is known for her roles in Endeavour and Silent Witness alongside her theatre work at The Royal Court, The Orange Tree and Headlong.

Her most recent roles include Molly in Casualty, Natalia in Trigonometry on BBC and Nadia in Breeders on Sky.

Shvorne has also read for many audio books including, It’s Not Ok to Feel Blue (and Other Lies) by Scarlett Curtis. She was nominated for a CAMEO: Book to Audio Award for her work on Queenie by Candice Carty-Williams.

A darkly comic and unflinchingly raw depiction of a young woman trying to navigate her way in the world, Queenie is about identity, independence and carving your own path.

Yuriri Naka

Narrator of The Phone Box at the Edge of the World, written by Laura Imai Messina and published by Zaffre

Yuriri Naka is a Japanese-born actress based in London. Since graduating from Rose Bruford College she has appeared in a variety of projects in film, TV and theatre. Most recently she finished a successful run of Don’t Sleep There Are Snakes in Park Theatre in London. Her film credits include: The Forest, 47 Ronin, Speed Racer. TV credits include: Toast of London (Channel4), Hoff The Record (Dave), The Fattest Man In Britain (ITV).

Yuriri also works extensively as a voice over artist. Her voice work ranges across audio drama, documentary narration and corporate audio materials.

Yuriri’s beautiful and thoughtful narration takes the listener on a delicate journey from the depths of loss back to life and love, gently unfurling the words of the international bestseller ‘The Phone Box at the Edge of the World’ by Laura Imai Messina that both break and mend the heart in equal measure.
