As pupils in schools around the country dress up as their favourite book characters for World Book Day, many are also ‘Reading for Good’ as they run our sponsored read.
Reading whatever they choose - from books to blogs, comics to classics - the sponsor money raised provides brand new books (over 25,000 each year) and fabulous storytellers for children in 30 major hospitals across the UK. In addition, schools receive Scholastic Book Club vouchers worth 20% of the amount raised to spend on new books for their own school.
We've found that for children, purposeful reading (i.e. reading to raise money to help other kids), with the freedom to choose exactly what they want to read, without assessment, can unlock a child's enjoyment of reading. This is what Readathon is all about.
