Heather Wood is development editor for Business, Finance and Risk list at Kogan Page.
What do you do?
I get to help authors from the very beginning, providing feedback on the content, tone, and suitability. I also assist the commissioning editor of the Business, Finance and Risk List on general tasks, as well as commissioning new editions of successful titles.
How did you get your role?
I graduated in 2017 with a degree in English Literature. Shortly afterwards, I joined a small publisher as an editorial assistant. I then moved to a scientific publisher as a publications assistant. These roles gave me a unique skill set, and I moved upwards to this role.
What do you love about your role?
I am the author’s point of contact when writing, and it brings me a great deal of satisfaction to be able to help assist with the writing process. I also love that I’m reading about innovative subjects from open banking to risk management every day.
Why did you want to work in publishing?
As someone who practically grew up in their local library, books have pretty much been my main focus for as long as I can remember. When considering what I wanted to choose as my career path, there was only one logical conclusion.
What would be your top tip for someone who wants to work in publishing?
Network and get involved. Join the Society of Young Publishers and look into publishing events in your area. Doing these kinds of things improved not only my knowledge of publishing but introduced me to so many amazing people.
