News: green4books launches!

The BA/PA Environmental Action Group, chaired by Helen Fraser of Penguin and made up of members of the publishing and bookselling industry, today launches www.green4books.org.uk, a new website designed to advise the book industry on environmental matters. The group calls on the publishing and bookselling industry to reduce its overall carbon emissions by at least 10% during the period covering January 2006 to December 2015. The website contains a wealth of useful advice on how every PA/BA member might achieve this target and more.

The BA/PA EAG was established in 2007 to work together to coordinate the publishing and bookselling industry’s response to major environmental concerns.  The group is drawn from people across the industry, including the largest publishing and retail groups and small independent publishers and booksellers. The website is designed to advise industry members of current environmental thinking and best practice and to inform the public about what the industry is doing to tackle climate change. The group understands that different organizations within publishing and bookselling will have different imperatives and will want to achieve their goals in the best way for their individual businesses, but it is committed to promoting and encouraging everyone in the industry to embrace the idea of sustainable growth.

The website offers advice and ideas to everyone in the industry on how to:

  • create a policy document
  • reduce carbon emissions
  • recycle more
  • reduce the use of packaging and plastic bags
  • reduce energy consumption and transport costs
  • reduce returns and gain supply chain efficiencies
  • source environmentally friendly paper and other products

green4books is administered by The Booksellers Association on behalf of the BA/PA EAG. Anyone wishing to comment on the site, or suggest amendments or additions, should initially contact Sydney Davies at The Booksellers Association – sydney.davies@booksellers.org.uk
