    For a long time the French book trade - publishing as well as bookselling - remained a craft industry, centred on family businesses and immune to the rigours and pressures of the stock exchange. But a series of mergers in the 1970s led to the development of an oligarchy within the industry, and the recent acquisition by Hachette of VUP has made France the most concentrated book market in the major countries of the developed world.
