Anti-piracy
Demand for UK titles in the growth markets of Asia and other emerging economies has increased dramatically. UK and US export statistics show a substantial shift in the balance of destination markets from the traditional Commonwealth markets to Asia.
The availability of cheap, high quality printing in many Asian countries is producing a frightening escalation in local piracy including commercial photocopying of standard texts. The only piracy statistics available on a worldwide basis are those of the International Intellectual Property Alliance (IIPA), a Washington-based lobby group representing US creative industry associations. Their annual reports demonstrate increasing piracy losses in these markets.
Pirate copies from Asia are not confined to Asian markets. There is increased evidence of cooperation between local pirates in African markets and renegade Asian printers. There seems to be no reason why this practice should not spread to other markets, indeed it may already have done so.
Currently the PA runs anti-piracy campaigns in four countries; India, China, Pakistan and Turkey.
