Digital Publishing Forum calendar for 2008

The PA and the Centre for Publishing at University College London announce their spring series of Digital Publishing Forum seminars.

Once again, these late afternoon seminars will be held at University College London from 4-6 pm and will be followed by drinks and informal discussion.

The aim of the Forum is to brief publishers on technical developments, market trends and legal issues in the area of digital publishing but will also be open to companies servicing the industry and other players in the information chain. It will provide an opportunity for these various parties to meet each other as well as listening to cutting edge but accessible presentations.

The programme for the spring series will include:

MARKETING ON THE INTERNET. Led by Graham Bell, HarperCollins and Matt Brown, Nature Publishing Group

Internet marketing has become an essential tool for any publishing company but its no longer just about bringing potential buyers to your website. In addition to imprint, author and even title-specific websites, publishers are now going where the traffic is and making use of the interactive and viral nature of social networks to promote their brands and products. An increasingly significant proportion of Internet book orders are the result of links from social networks via publishers' widgets or direct links from sites to an Internet bookseller. This seminar provides an opportunity for leading practitioners from major trade and academic publishers to talk about how they are using the Internet to build communities, increase the profile of their publications and attract business.

SPECIFYING AND IMPLEMENTING A DIGITAL ASSET MANAGEMENT SYSTEM, led by Mark Bide, Righstcom

With the increase in print on demand and the growth of markets for digital product, publishers are anxious to maximize the potential value of their intellectual property assets. In order to do this effectively, some sort of Digital Asset Management (DAM) system needs to be in place to manage

and facilitate storage, retrieval and re-use of those assets. This seminar looks at the functions of a DAM system, the decisions that have to made when specifying one and the options available for implementing such a system either in-house or outsourced to a third party. The seminar will be led by Mark Bide of Rightscom, who will be joined by publishers who have implemented DAM systems

The fee for each seminar will be £40-00 + VAT (£47) for members of the Publishers Association and £80-00 + VAT (£94) for non-members.
