National Occupational Standards in publishing

The new National Occupational Standards for Publishing are now available. Revised and updated by a team of industry experts, working with The Publishing Training Centre and the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority, the latest set of standards provide a clear and concise guide to the knowledge and skills required for many publishing roles.

The standards describe what you need to know and what you must be able to do, in order to perform most publishing functions. The standards cover Commissioning and Acquisitions, Rights, Contracts, Design, Editorial Management, Editing and Production, and Marketing. They can help:

  • form the basis for job descriptions
  • provide you with a checklist of skills and knowledge to aid in the recruitment process
  • form guildelines in appraisals
  • identify skills gaps and training needs

The standards are now available to download, free of charge, from The Publishing Training Centre's website. Or you can order a printed copy for £5 per module or £35 for the set by phoning the centre for an order form on 020 8874 2718.
