First steps

  • Talk to anyone you know currently working in book publishing; request information from one of the training institutions listed in this leaflet and from your local careers office.
  • Read book pages in the press; follow book-orientated programmes in the media; visit good stockholding bookshops.
  • Read some of the available literature about book publishing - see list below
  • Read several current issues of trade publications such as The Bookseller and Publishing News (copies can be found in most public libraries).
  • Request information (enclosing an sae) from any of the professional organisations listed below.
  • Prepare a curriculum vitae (CV), clearly setting out details of name, address, telephone number, age, education, qualifications, experience and interests and apply promptly in writing, enclosing a CV, for any job vacancies relevant to your current qualifications and interest.
  • If you are called for an interview and have time, obtain any available brochures or catalogues from the company concerned to give you details of the publisher's range of publications and help prepare you for the interview.
