The PA Reading for Pleasure initiative aims to provide an overview of the huge range of inspiring work being undertaken by a variety of charities in the UK to promote reading for pleasure. At The PA, we and our member companies work extremely closely with these bodies to assist their programmes to promote reading. We thought it would be useful to provide a compendium of all of that activity to provide a complete perspective of the work that is going on, to best steer publishing houses, authors, and colleagues to help.
Working alongside Save The Children's Read On, Get On campaign, which aims to get every child reading well by the age of 11 by 2025, our reading for pleasure campaign, backed up by the Publishing for Britain manifesto, will guide you through the fantastic charities and the work they do.
Why we do what we do
Reading for pleasure is an end in itself, but it is also the gateway to fulfilment in other ways. Research strongly suggests that reading for pleasure can boost a child's progress across a range of school subjects, in maths as well as literacy. And in turn, research also shows that higher achievement in these core subjects is intrinsically good for our society and economy in the longer term.
Of course, it's not just the young who can benefit from guidance in guidance in reading for pleasure. No adult, whether they struggled to read at school or struggle to find the time to read now, are beyond support in finding a way to read for pleasure.
